ATV/UTV Training

The ATV/UTV rider course is a 6 ½ to 8-hour training provided by our Canada Safety Council certified instructors. The course is a hands-on learning experience designed to provide safety training for both the recreational and workplace user. It provides students with the ability to have a combination of safety discussions and real-time riding experience designed to fit all riding experiences.

The course covers such topics as pre-inspections, riding techniques, loading and unloading, winching, protective equipment and environmental concerns and considerations.  For UTV rider courses transportation of cargo will be covered.

Machine Requirements - each student will be required to have their own working ATV/UTV. All machines will be inspected by the instructor prior to being used during the course. Machines must have:

  • Good working brakes

  • Good working steering

  • Good working exhaust

  • Tires in good working order

The ATV/UTV Rider course is considered a closed course, therefore machines do not have to be registered or have any trail pass. Any machine failing to meet the above requirements will not be permitted to be used during the course.

Personal Protective Equipment – All students are required to have and use the following protective gear for the duration of the course.

  • An approved DOT, SNELL or CSA approved helmet that has working straps

  • Safety glasses or riding googles – can be clear or tinted (glasses and googles are not required if the rider’s helmet is equipped with a face shield

  • Gloves

  • Long pants

  • Boots that extend above the ankle - no sneakers, crocs or sandals permitted

  • Long sleeve shirt – short sleeve shirt may be permitted if high temperature

  • Rain gear (optional)

Students should also:

  • Be well rested and ready to learn

  • Be prepared to be outdoors for the entire duration of the course

  • Bring sunscreen and bug spray

  • Not under the influence of any type of drug or alcohol that could impair the rider

  • Consider if they have any medical conditions that may cause an unsafe riding experience. Students should contact SSNS for clarification.

All students are required to attend the full course to obtain certification. All students will receive a student handbook and a course completion certificate.

Please note: students must be a minimum age of 16 years to participate in this training. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign for that student.
